Dr. Dexter Harvey Award in Primary Prevention


Dr. Dexter Harvey’s dedication to improving the public health and well-being of Canadians is shown through his long and distinguished academic and volunteer careers. He has worked as leader in the Canadian Heart Health Initiative, transforming public health in Manitoba and across the country. He went on to lead the creation of the Alliance for the Prevention of Chronic Disease (Manitoba), Partners in Planning for Healthy Living, the Physical Activity Coalition of Manitoba, and the Primary Prevention Syndicate, in each case collaboratively bringing together multiple partner organizations and sectors.

Dr. Harvey was a professor at the University of Manitoba for 30 years prior to his retirement in 2004, and during this time held the position of professor jointly in the faculty of education, the department of community health sciences and the school of medical rehabilitation in the faculty of medicine, as well as adjunct professor in the department of human nutritional sciences.

As a senior volunteer within Heart & Stroke in Manitoba for over 30 years, Dr. Harvey has served in a number of roles including twice as chair of the provincial board, past chair and member of several board committees. Dr. Harvey is well known for his academic achievements as well as his dedication, integrity and leadership. The Heart and Stroke Foundation in Manitoba is pleased to name this research award, specifically for student researchers focused on primary prevention, in Dr. Harvey’s honour.
