One of the most powerful ways you can make a difference is by becoming a monthly donor to fund vital research year-round.

Your monthly gift to the Breakthrough Fund is absolutely vital to providing a steady stream of funding for complex and comprehensive heart disease & stroke research. Essentially, your monthly giving will keep world-class research on course towards a major breakthrough – a breakthrough that could actually save the life of someone you love.

What exactly is the Breakthrough Fund? +

The Breakthrough Fund is our monthly donor program that funds Canadian cutting edge research in heart disease and stroke. Some of the best medical minds in Canada, funded through your donations to Heart & Stroke, are working tirelessly to save the moments we cherish from being taken away too soon.

How is my donation used? +

For over 60 years, Heart & Stroke has been dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Our work has saved thousands of lives and improved the lives of millions of others. We accomplished this through a focused investment in three key areas in order to bring our vision to life: preventing disease, saving lives, and promoting recovery.

How do I become a monthly donor? +

To become a monthly donor, you can visit our website or call 1-877-882-2582 for more information on ways to donate.

Will I receive a tax receipt for my monthly donations? +

Yes, for your convenience, a consolidated tax receipt will be sent to you each February. If you make a one-time gift, you will be sent a tax receipt right after your donation is made. In both cases, you are able to choose to receive your receipt by email or mail. If you are looking for a replacement receipt today, please email us at monthly@heartandstroke.ca or call us at 1-877-882-2582.

Who should I contact if I want to make changes to or cancel my monthly donation? +

You are always in charge of your giving. If you ever have any questions or would like to update your monthly gift amount, banking or personal information, please call us at 1-877-882-2582 or email us at monthly@heartandstroke.ca. For security reasons, do not send any banking or credit card information by email.

Why are you coming to my door for a donation? +

We need to keep research on course towards the major breakthroughs in Heart and Stroke research.

Your gifts are an investment into the best medical minds in the world who are working tirelessly to reverse heart damage and save the moments we cherish from being taken away too soon.

Your monthly gifts are vital to provide a steady stream of funding for complex and time-consuming research. Without consistent support from people like you, funding can dry up, and staff may move on to other projects. This leaves the research on hold and can even set back any progress made.

Someone claiming to be from Heart & Stroke came to my house asking me to make a monthly gift? Is this legitimate? +

You may have recently received a friendly visit from a Heart & Stroke Canvasser inviting you to join our Breakthrough Fund by making a monthly gift. Please note that all official Heart & Stroke Monthly Giving Ambassadors carry:

  • A personal ID badge with their photo, full name and fundraiser ID number on a Heart & Stroke branded lanyard.

Who are Globalfaces Direct and Up Fundraising? +

Globalfaces Direct and Up Fundraising are trusted partners of Heart & Stroke. We work closely with them on a daily basis in order to engage Canadians in conversation about the work of Heart & Stroke and recruit new monthly donors to sustain our work. All Heart & Stroke canvassers that are recruited to work receive comprehensive training in direct collaboration with Heart & Stroke, allowing them to speak knowledgeably on behalf of the Heart & Stroke about our mission and fundraising programs.

In order to raise the greatest amount of funding for research breakthroughs while keeping our cost of fundraising as low as possible, we sometimes work with trusted strategic partners in order to leverage their expertise for the greatest return on your investment in Heart & Stroke research.

Is my information secure? +

You or our fundraiser will enter and submit your information into the secure tablet, where your information will be encrypted. A verification call and or email will take place to verify the payment information for accuracy, and to ensure you understand the monthly giving commitment. Our trusted Telephone Verification Centre call numbers: 1-866-478-0673 and 647-812-0400. Heart & Stroke works closely with Globalfaces Direct and Up Fundraising to ensure your information remains secure and confidential.

What precautions are you taking to keep donors and canvassers safe? +

The safety of donors and canvassers is of the utmost importance to us. Our teams are following public health advice from provincial and federal governments. In addition, Globalfaces Direct and Up Fundraising provides canvassers with health and safety trainings and protocols for our representatives across Canada. Staff are required to stay home and isolate if experiencing illness of any kind, and to follow COVID-19 exposure protocols as mandated by each province. We will continue to monitor the situation and alter our programs where necessary.

Heart & Stroke conducts telephone fundraising campaigns with the primary focus of sharing information about the incredible research projects you can bring to life. Telemarking is a cost-effective way to reach supporters and raise important funds for new and ongoing initiatives.

Why are you canvassing for monthly donations? +

Breakthroughs in heart disease and stroke are within our reach. As you read this some of the best medical minds in the world are working tirelessly to save the precious moments we cherish from being taken away too soon.

When you support Heart & Stroke through a donation through a canvasser, you are making an investment to saving the lives of those you love. Heart disease and stroke is the number one killer globally. Your gifts provide a steady stream of funding for complex and time-consuming research. Without consistent support from people like you, funding can dry up, and staff may move on to other projects. This leaves the research on hold, and can even set back any progress made.

You can keep research on course towards a major breakthrough.

Where are you currently canvassing? +

We are currently working with an external partner to canvass for donations in Vancouver and surrounding areas, Calgary, and the Greater Toronto Area, in local malls and on the street. We work with these partners because it is the safest and most efficient way to raise funds, while achieving the greatest impact with your gift to beat heart disease and stroke.

Who is Up Fundraising? +

Up Fundraising is a trusted partner of Heart & Stroke.  We work closely with them on a daily basis in order to engage Canadians in conversation about the work of Heart & Stroke and recruit new monthly donors to sustain our work. All Heart & Stroke canvassers that are recruited to work with Up Fundraising receive comprehensive training in direct collaboration with Heart & Stroke, allowing them to speak knowledgeably on behalf of the Heart & Stroke about our mission and fundraising programs.

Why does Heart & Stroke work with Up Fundraising for monthly donations? +

In order to raise the greatest amount of funding for research breakthroughs while keeping our cost of fundraising as low as possible, we sometimes work with trusted strategic partners in order to leverage their expertise for the greatest return on your investment in Heart & Stroke research.  

How can I tell if a canvasser is legitimate? +

Our canvassers can be identified by their Heart & Stroke badges. They also wear lanyards, polo shirts or vests, and hats with our logo on it.  The mall canvassers will work at Heart & Stroke branded booths.

Why won’t the canvasser accept a cash donation? +

For safety reasons, our canvassers do not accept cash donations. All donations are processed contact-free, using your credit card or banking information over secure technology. If you prefer you can visit our website or call 1-877-882-2582 for more information on ways to donate.

Can I make a one-time donation instead? +

At this time, the canvassers are only set up to process monthly donations, not one-time gifts. If you wish to make a one-time donation, please visit our website or call 1-877-882-2582.

Why do canvassers use a cell phone/tablet to collect my credit card information? Is it safe? +

The safety of our donors’ information is paramount. Canvassers use company issued phones/tablets to record and process your information as donor in a secure form. Heart & Stroke works closely with Up Fundraising to ensure your information remains secure and confidential.
