Who we need
Heart and Stroke is adding bold, passionate, fearless and compassionate people to our dedicated teams across the country. We need a builder - of relationships, of teams and of strategy; someone who can coach the Northern Alberta team including two remote members. This is an Edmonton-based role at an office that embraces the powerful impact of our volunteers, and coordinators. We want someone who can guide this highly motivated team helping them to make an impact personally, and across the community, as well encouraging stepping stones to growing their career. This is a chance for someone with a breadth of experience who understands fundraising programs, corporate partnerships, stakeholder relationships and engagement; someone who can connect the dots and apply nonprofit expertise to navigate conversations and who understands this sector. This is a role for a leader to step in and work with an incredibly knowledgeable team, to recognize and realize the possibilities of the market we are in. It’s a chance for someone who is excited to capitalize on the untapped opportunities out there; and exponentially increase the fundraising dollars we bring in. We need someone with unbounded energy and passion to help solve a massive problem that impacts the lives of people in Canada living with heart and brain diseases. We’re hiring for a Community Engagement Manager in our Edmonton office; someone who wants to make a difference and save lives every day by:
- Promoting leadership and community giving expertise to a team of staff and senior level volunteers to successfully achieve fundraising goals.
- Developing a portfolio of prospects including key businesses, organizations and individuals at various stages of identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
- Collaborating with internal partners to effectively steward relationships including identifying and engaging top donor prospects in the region.
- Navigating opportunities to build out unique, creative events to make Northern Alberta stand out.
- Promoting Heart and Stroke’s mission, and implementing strategies to strengthen community presence.

How you will make an impact every day:
- Develop and execute local community engagement and fundraising plans, monitoring benchmarks to ensure annual goals are achieved. You will:
- Support the Regional Director and internal partners to identify prospective donors (from current roster & established pipelines) to grow the community engagement portfolio for Northern Alberta and identify new opportunities.
- Use data analytics and the community fundraising strategy to engage supporters further and increase donor acquisition, participation and revenue.
- Prioritize, cultivate and steward existing top relationships to deepen their connection to Heart and Stroke.
- Develop and implement strategies to introduce, maintain and expand relationships with new and current businesses, organizations and individuals to achieve fundraising objectives.
- Collaborate. You will work with colleagues to identify and maximize cross-functional/ cross-market opportunities in alignment with the Foundations mission and new National initiatives.
- Community engagement and volunteer development. You will:
- Grow and support a diverse volunteer leadership team to champion the success of Heart and Stroke.
- Inspire and motivate the involvement and giving of others.
- Provide operational leadership for the refinement and growth of four National fundraising programs (Jump Rope for Heart, Heart & Stroke Canvass, Big Bike, My Own Fundraiser).
- Lead the development and management of the area office. You will complete evaluations, forecasting, and reporting; perform financial ROI analyses; identify areas of growth and opportunities to leverage technology. You will:
- Foster the open communication, autonomy, support and success of the team.
- Partner with Human Resources to recruit and sustain a high performing, highly engaged and Nationally aligned team.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and feedback to help grow and develop the team; supporting them to fulfill their accountabilities and achieve their revenue goals and their career potential.
What you bring:
- The education. You have a university degree in a relevant field.
- The experience. You have 5+ years meeting and exceeding business development and nonprofit fundraising deliverables. You know how to work across multiple branches/locations and effectively roll out a national strategy. You have connections within Edmonton and ideally, across Northern Alberta. You can navigate geographical and cultural divides and work with diverse stakeholders. You are proactive, goal-oriented and creatively resourceful.
- The relationship building expertise. You can gain the trust of the community, business, and school audiences, deepening existing and growing new relationships. You can inspire action, build momentum and encourage participation.
- The communication skills. You are a trusted advisor who can influence stakeholders and volunteers. You can effectively promote opportunities and partnerships through excellent public speaking, presentations and face-to-face networking. You have outstanding written and verbal skills. You can build persuasive arguments to support business goals.
- The team-building. You can coach and engage a team, creating an environment that is motivating and inspiring. You can foster a culture of collaboration and learning aligned with the Foundation’s values. You lead by example and jump in whenever and wherever you are needed.
- The analytics and processes. You can interpret reports, manage financial information, extract data and apply information for forecasting. You can design and implement processes; manage a demanding schedule; and, prioritize efforts to achieve high value.
- The technical abilities. You are highly proficient with a CRM database and MS Office. Familiarity with a fundraising platform would be an asset.
- The flexibility. You can lead, participate in and support evening and weekend community events. You understand late or extra hours are often needed. You have a valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle and the ability to travel throughout your geographic area 1 to 2 days a week to make presentations at corporate head offices, support the team, attend Big Bike events, conduct the Jump kickoff.
