The opportunity

We are seeking a knowledgeable, experienced, and dynamic team leader who can think strategically and who will contribute to the credibility and mission of the Foundation. The Director, Health Promotion and Stakeholder Relations position is critical to the delivery of our mission priorities in Saskatchewan.  Leading a team of health promotion professionals, the Director is responsible for guiding, directing and evaluating the Foundation’s health promotion efforts in Saskatchewan. 

The Director is a member of the provincial leadership team and the national mission team and contributes to organizational-wide initiatives.

Key responsibilities

Stakeholder relations, partnerships and advocacy

  • Oversee effective and efficient management of the health promotion, health information services, stroke, survivor support services, advocacy and research portfolios
  • Participate in strategic planning, visioning, and budgeting for the organization as a whole, and specifically for health promotion, health information services, stroke, survivor support services, research, resuscitation, and advocacy as mission areas
  • Work with the national Government Relations committee in reviewing, planning and implementing national advocacy and mission strategies in Saskatchewan
  • Develop and maintain effective communication links with associations and regulatory agencies that can assist the Foundation in achieving its mission goals
  • Research and monitor program activities by peer agencies in the health, government, and charitable sectors
  • Build relationships with federal, provincial and local authorities, including working with staff to ensure open lines of communication and advancement of Heart & Stroke mission
  • Support the development of healthy public policy at all levels of government
  • Work with Mission leads across the country and the Research staff in planning and implementing national plans in Saskatchewan
  • Liaise with other organizations, groups and individuals, as appropriate to further the mission of the Foundation 
  • Represent the Foundation, providing support and leadership as appropriate, in relevant provincial coalitions and alliances such as with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Regional Health Authorities, etc.

Research support

  • Develop provincial research strategy for Saskatchewan to strengthen and build local research capacity
  • Engage Saskatchewan research community in opportunities such as funding and partnerships, which benefit the HSF research enterprise
  • Liaise with appropriate representatives from the U of R and U of S, other Foundation partners, Saskatchewan HSF staff, and mission /research committees

Advisor and partner 

  • Work pro-actively and collaboratively with staff and volunteers across the country to problem solve and develop common advocacy initiatives and strategic priorities 
  • Support internal partners in promoting the Foundation’s programs and developing cases for support
  • Collaborate with the national mission leaders, national committees and work groups and other provincial Foundations regarding program development and management.

Human resource management and leadership

  • Provide organizational leadership, along with the other Directors, in the CEO’s absence
  • Supervise the work and conduct of department staff including goal setting and staff performance reviews
  • Ensure that department staff are managed in accordance with the human resource regulations and policies of the Foundation
  • Provide leadership and support to the various volunteer committees that may reflect the Director’s responsibilities
  • Provide effective facilitative leadership to department staff and motivate them to a high level of performance


University degree in health promotion, health sciences, public/health administration or related field (Master’s degree preferred)

Experience and skills

  • A minimum of eight years of progressive responsibility in health promotion, advocacy, and health systems, including at least four in a supervisory role
  • Seasoned leader with a track record of success in implementing health promotion programs. 
  • Network with government officials and related non-governmental organizations 
  • Experience with CVD prevention and the federal, provincial, regional and municipal governments and their roles in promoting health 
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the research process and/or grants management is an asset
  • Successful track record in various areas of the field of health promotion, including advocacy, government and community relations
  • Experience in the not-for-profit sector is considered an asset
  • Excellent relationship building skills to generate enthusiasm and motivate staff, key stakeholders, donors and volunteers around a shared vision.
  • Well-developed leadership and facilitation skills.  
  • A strong technical background in program planning and evaluation and a firm grasp of health promotion theory and models is required. 
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to align competing priorities
  • Financial management skills to plan, prepare and administer department budgets.
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills, 
  • Ability to work well as part of a team, and under pressure
  • Strong leadership, supervisory, and motivational skills
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated strength in both volunteer and staff management
