The opportunity

We are seeking a creative and hands-on individual with strong analytical and applied research skills to join our national Mission team. 

The Specialist, Evaluation & Knowledge Exchange will work closely with the Senior Manager, Planning, Evaluation and Strategic Initiatives, other Mission leaders and staff from the national and provincial teams to develop and deliver evaluation projects, knowledge products and information resources about mission-related activities, opportunities, achievements, performance and outcomes. The Specialist will play a key role in highlighting and improving Mission programs, opportunities and impact.

Rigorous, mindful and grounded in our mission and the needs of internal and external stakeholders, including donors and people with lived experience, the Specialist, supports evaluation activities, develops informational resources and implements knowledge exchange activities to promote shared understanding of our mission work and impact. In doing so, the Specialist proactively reaches out, responding and addressing gaps or requests for internal clients, notably development, communications and marketing, and finance. 

Key responsibilities
  • Collect, synthesize and structure information on mission-related activities, outputs, outcomes and impacts in alignment with Heart & Stroke’s strategic directions, performance framework and donor stewardship obligations.
  • Develop tools and processes for collecting and monitoring Mission achievements including using visualization tools to support strategic learning and key decision-making
  • Collaborate with the research team and provinces to capture and summarize HSF funded research projects to identify impact for stakeholders to profile with constituents.
  • Develops and disseminates products to internal and external audiences that build an increased understanding of Mission activities, opportunities and impact.
  • Design and deliver knowledge translation and exchange activities to increase understanding   and application of findings/evidence/successes into practice across the Foundation and externally. 
  • Design and deliver knowledge exchange activities (e.g., webinars, lunch and learn activities) aimed to increase internal staff’s understanding of Mission activities, achievements and outcomes.
  • Prepare reports (e.g., fact-bases, charts, presentations, briefing notes) on Mission achievements, outcomes and other data streams, with a focus on communicating findings in meaningful and actionable ways
  • Work closely with the Data and Knowledge Management team to translate, disseminate and ensure accurate interpretation of mission impact and other epidemiological or population-level data on heart disease, stroke and risk factors to support planning and performance evaluation
  • Collaborate with the Office of the CEO and the Communication and Marketing Teams to ensure alignment with Foundation performance framework and messaging.
  • Collaborate on or leads evaluation projects and other strategic initiatives.
  • As determined with the Senior Manager, lead or support evaluation projects and various strategic initiatives and ensure high quality approaches and methodologies.
  • Design evaluation plans and tools in support of Mission activities, providing methodological support and producing evaluation reports. 
  • Support the application of findings from internal and external evaluations in Mission work. 
  • Develop project plans, work collaboratively with colleagues in mission or in other departments, to executive on strategic initiatives as prioritized in the National Mission Plan.
Qualifications

Education

  • Graduate degree in a health-related discipline is preferred, with broad understanding of cardio/cerebrovascular and other relevant science. 

Experience and Skills 

  • 3-5 years of previous work experience in a research environment, health charity sector, not-for-profit organization, or federal or provincial government. 
  • Clinical or population/public health background and experience in knowledge exchange theory and practice are definite assets. 
  • 2 years’ experience in monitoring and analyzing evaluation data and program outputs, or in designing and evaluating programs.
  • Strong relationship, organizational and communication skills, including the ability to interface effectively with cross-functional teams as well as all levels of management.
  • Demonstrated superior analytical and critical thinking skills including statistical and/or epidemiological experience and evaluation methodology skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and synthesize complex health information
  • Proficiency searching a variety of online information databases and using various applications to structure or visualize data (e.g., Tableau, PowerPivot); familiarity with specialized approaches (e.g., bibliometric) is an asset.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to use technological tools to support the work of the team (i.e., MS Office Suite, SharePoint, CRM and other workflow tools, digital engagement platforms).
  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills to prepare wide range of outputs and help stakeholders understand data/evidence. 
  • Proven project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • An ability to work in both official languages (English & French) is preferred.
